Battlefield war graves on the Western Front

Soldiers that were killed in action or died as a result of wounds were buried in cemeteries close to where they fell, or in larger collective cemeteries such as that at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
Sometimes when military or medical units were located near to a village behind the Front Line, military burials took place in the local village civilian cemetery.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission oversee the cemeteries, burial plots and memorials of 1,700,000 men and women who died throughout the two World Wars. It is comforting to know that Australian soldiers who died far from home continue to be cared for in beautifully tended cemeteries.
